Cost of Studying in the US
When considering studying in the USA, it is important to understand the cost of education. US universities can be divided into two categories: public-funded institutions and private institutions. The tuition expenses for international students at state schools are typically based on non-resident costs, which are generally lower than those of private universities. Please note that these costs do not include student visa fees. On average, you should budget approximately $10,000 to $55,000 per year to cover tuition fees when studying in the USA.

Eligibility Requirements for Students at US Universities
- Age Requirement: Students must be over 18 years of age to be eligible for enrollment at US universities.
- On-Campus Employment: International students on an F-1 student visa are generally allowed to work on-campus for up to 20 hours per week during academic terms. They may also work full-time during academic break periods, including summer.
- Off-Campus Employment Authorization: Off-campus employment requires written or documented authorization issued by either the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) or the Office of International Student Services (OISS). This authorization could be in the form of Optional Practical Training (OPT), Curricular Practical Training (CPT), or other approved programs.
- Minimum Academic Year Enrollment: To be eligible for any form of off-campus employment, international students must be currently in legal status and have been enrolled as a student on an F-1 student visa in the US for a minimum of one academic year.
US Student Visa (F1 Visa) Requirements
When applying for a US Student Visa (F1 Visa) to study at a US university, you will typically need the following documents:
Ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended period of stay in the US.
Provide a recent, colour photograph that meets the specific requirements outlined by the US embassy or consulate.
Complete the online DS-160 form (Nonimmigrant Visa Application) and obtain the confirmation page with the barcode.
Your US university will issue a Form I-20, which is a certificate of eligibility for nonimmigrant student status. This document verifies your acceptance and enrollment at the university. You will need to present the original I-20 during your visa interview.
The Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) fee must be paid before your visa interview. You will receive a receipt indicating payment, which you should bring to your interview as proof.
Complete the nonimmigrant visa application (Form DS-160) and submit it online. You will need to provide the confirmation page during your visa interview.
Here are the steps to apply for a US student visa:
- After graduating from a US university, F1 Student Visa holders have the opportunity to engage in Optional Practical Training (OPT) for up to 12 months. OPT provides temporary employment authorization, allowing students to gain practical experience in their field of study.
- During the OPT period, students can work in the US without needing a separate work visa. It is an excellent opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills acquired during their studies in a professional setting.
- Once the OPT period ends, if a student wishes to continue working in the US, they will be required to apply for a work visa that aligns with their employment goals and qualifications. Examples of work visas include the H-1B visa for specialised workers or the O-1 visa for individuals with extraordinary abilities in their field. The specific visa category will depend on the individual's circumstances and eligibility.
- It's important to note that F1 Student Visa holders can remain in the US for up to 60 days after completing their course, even if they don't have a job offer or haven't applied for OPT. This period allows students to wrap up their affairs and make necessary arrangements before departing the US.
Student Dependent Visa (F2 Visa)
For immediate family members of F1 visa holders, such as spouses and unmarried children under the age of 21, the student dependent visa is called the F2 Visa. The F2 visa allows these dependents to accompany the F1 student in the US. However, it’s important to understand that F2 visa holders are not authorised to work in the US and their primary purpose is to support and accompany the F1 student during their studies.
Eligibility conditions for the F2 visa include:
The applicant must be the legally married spouse of an F1 student visa holder.
The applicant must be an unmarried child under the age of 21 who is dependent on the F1 visa holder.
The applicant must have sufficient financial resources to support themselves and their family during their stay in the US.
Requirements for the F2 visa application include:
Original and photocopies of the passport.
Confirmation of the DS-160 visa application.
A photograph that meets the U.S. visa requirements.
Birth certificate for dependent children.
Marriage certificate for spouses.
Proof of payment for the visa application fee.
The applicant's I-20 form and a copy of the F1 visa holder's I-20 form.

Benefits of the F2 visa include:

F2 visa holders can request a change of visa status, such as to an F1 visa, by enrolling in a US higher education program. They can also request a change of visa status if they find a suitable job.
F2 visa holders can become eligible to apply for a Green Card on their own, in addition to automatically obtaining one if the primary F1 visa holder receives it. They can change their visa status to a different category that allows for dual purpose and then apply for a Green Card. Employment can also make them eligible for a Green Card.
F2 visa holders have access to medical services and hospitals in the US. It is advisable to consider purchasing health insurance to cover potential high healthcare costs, especially for a long stay or expected medical situations.
Restrictions associated with the F2 visa include:
F2 visa holders are not permitted to work in the United States. As a result, they are not eligible to obtain a Social Security Number (SSN).
Due to the restriction on employment, F2 visa holders are not eligible to obtain a Social Security Number.
F2 visa holders are not allowed to enrol in Bachelor's or Master's degree programs at US universities. However, they are eligible to participate in recreational and vocational training courses. If they wish to pursue higher studies, they must first apply for a change of visa status.
When initially travelling to the United States on an F2 visa, the dependent must either be accompanied by the primary F1 visa holder or arrive at a later date after the F1 holder. They are not allowed to enter the United States before the F1 visa holder. This restriction applies only to the first entry and not subsequent travel.
Student Visa - Vocational Course (M1 Visa)
The M1 visa is a non-immigrant student visa specifically designed for individuals seeking to pursue vocational training in the United States. It allows students to enter the US and engage in full-time vocational studies.
With an M1 visa, students have certain privileges such as obtaining a driver’s licence, opening a bank account in the US, accessing healthcare services, and applying for employment under certain restrictions.
However, there are certain limitations and requirements associated with the M1 visa:
M1 visa holders are not eligible to apply for non-academic or vocational training courses in the US.
Applicants must meet the minimum education qualification required for admission into the vocational course they intend to pursue.
Students must have been admitted by a US educational institution and possess the Form I-20.
Applicants must demonstrate the appropriate level of proficiency in English.
Students must show proof of financial stability and have enough funds to cover their expenses while studying in the US.
Students must demonstrate that they have no intention of remaining in the US and plan to leave the country after completing their education.
The educational institution must be convinced that the education the student receives will benefit their country of origin.
